What is SR-22?

An SR-22 is not itself an insurance policy, but a certificate which is filed with the state by an insurance company on behalf of an individual to provide proof of an active policy. Residents of St. Joseph and areas throughout Missouri are required to have an SR-22 filing when seeking license reinstatement following a reckless driving conviction, driving without insurance, or other violations resulting in suspension.

Liability minimums for policyholders with SR-22s are:

$10,000 to be paid for property damage
$25,000 to be paid per person for bodily injuries
$50,000 to be paid for all bodily injuries to all persons with remaining parties pursuing the policy holder for sums which exceed the set amount

SR-22s are usually set to be held for a specified number of years. If a policyholder fails to pay their auto insurance premium, the filing is cancelled and an SR-26 is filed with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Upon receipt of the SR-26, the policyholder’s license is again suspended until a new SR-22 is filed.
